Citizens, community groups and the federal court have played a dominant role in shaping today’s Kansas City School District. Barbara Shelly’s column (6/20, Opinion, “KC School District requires heroic efforts”) suggesting that community involvement is the district’s best hope for reforming the district is the same old failed policy of the past.

While Sens. Clinton and Obama addressed the nation this week to present a unified party, wasn’t it interesting to see Obama sit during Clinton’s remarks while Clinton, an experienced leader and lady, stood attentively during his entire remarks, revealing Obama’s carelessness and inexperience as a leader. Hot air and rhetoric with minimal substance will not suffice.

Fifty-eight years ago, June 24, 1950, Secretary of State Dean Acheson called President Truman at his home in Independence to alert him to the invasion of South Korea by North Korea. Because details were sketchy, Acheson advised the president to delay his return to Washington until the next day.

I see once again our Constitution is under attack in the form of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 2008, and the assault goes underreported by our “free press” and unnoticed by the public (6/20, A-2, “Wiretapping bill rewritten”). Sen. Kit Bond has led the charge with his compromise legislation that would vastly expand the Bush administration’s powers to spy on the American people while at the same time granting immunity to the telecommunications...

The inaction of the Bush Administration and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke in addressing the problem of rapidly expanding inflation in this country and the weak dollar reminds me of what Herbert Hoover told the nation as it descended into the Great Depression of the ’30s: “Prosperity is just around the corner.”

The light-rail debate has gone on too long. Jump-starting construction of the Kansas City portion of Mayor Funkhouser’s proposed multi-city rail service is merely a sneaky way to give Clay Chastain his dream.

After seeing the front page picture about bus ridership (6/23, A-1, “It’s a traffic jam aboard buses”), I realize times really have changed. Not only are more people riding the bus, but not one of the three men seated in front got up to offer their seat to the female standing in the aisle.

Thank goodness for a dress code at the Power & Light District. And no, it’s not racial. Whites as well as African-Americans wear those long baggy pants, and I, for one, am glad that they’re taking a stand down there. We have a nice place to go and a place we can show out-of-towners. If two visitors from Tennessee can respect our dress code (6/20, A-1, “A dressing-down over dress code”), then why can’t locals?

It is funny how the great minds of our city government work. We voted in a light rail plan, but city officials, in their wisdom, turned it down. Mayor Funkhouser brought in representatives from Denver who told us to start with a starter line, so he came out with a grand plan for three counties that is going nowhere fast.

I have seen plenty of trendily yet tastefully dressed young people of all races at the Power & Light District, and have witnessed very few problems. This is not a coincidence. It is all thanks to the enforcement of age and dress codes by the Cordish Co. (6/20, A-1, “A dressing-down over dress code; As complaints mount, council members want answers from Cordish Co., which denies bias”).

Laurie Callan of Overland Park (Letters, 6/19) knows nothing about military families. The military family has always been under pressure because of separations, but the military families are not now disintegrating because of the Iraq war.

Thank you for Stacy Downs’ fascinating profile of Gloria Squitiro, Kansas City’s first lady (7/1, A-1, “Defenders see sass; detractors say crass).
